To whom this may Concern:
Citizens in Need of Help and Taking Action
This correspondence is an attempt to save our community. As a group of homeowners who reside on the Southeast side of Joliet in an unincorporated area, we feel compelled to sound the alarm about the injustices that are happening in our community and to long-time residents whose voices have repeatedly been silenced. We are desperately seeking support and involvement from anyone who may have a vested interest in keeping our city, neighborhoods and community intact and free of crime and all other undesirable elements that come with allowing a large truck stop to be placed in our community.
Plans are underway to build a Love’s Trucking at the NorthWest corner of Briggs Street and New Lenox Road in Joliet, Illinois. Joliet’s Ex-Mayor, Bob O’DeKirk and Loves Trucking have entered into an agreement— despite community rejection—to allow Loves to occupy this location. By doing so, the two entities have Infringed on the rights of local and surrounding residents. As such, we as a community are demanding that the two entities immediately cease and desist on their plan of action.
We, as concerned citizens, all reside in a diverse community that has many seniors and retirees who have been homeowners in the area for decades. This deal will impact our entire community 151,000 if the City of Joliet and Loves proceed. It will force longtime residents out of the community for the sole purpose of utilizing our land to build a truck stop, a photovoltaic power station (ie.. Solar Farm) and yet, more industrial warehousing. Therefore, we must take immediate action to protect our land, homes, air quality and keep our neighborhoods safe.

Traffic Flow and Road Safety
It is important to note that Love’s planned actions will contribute to an already congested traffic flow, and their presence will add 700 trucks and 2,600 cars daily to the area. Adding these additional vehicles to an already congested area is of major concern. Further, it is widely known that there is a need for immediate repairs to Joliet’s overpass on I-80 which is a Tier 1 freight corridor that utilizes the Briggs Street overpass, and has a safety rating of 19% out of 100% by IDOT. This bridge has been deemed critically dangerous and thus, needs to be replaced.
Another major factor is that this development (Love’s) will prevent emergency service vehicles (Ambulances, Police Cars, Fire Trucks, etc.) from promptly getting to our neighborhoods should the need arise for their immediate service. This, again, is all due to the anticipated traffic congestion that will impact traffic flow. Also, when considering the criminal element that this development will bring, the impact could be disastrous for the entire community. The rise of human trafficking, illegal drug activity, and other unimaginable crimes are an imminent threat, potentially like nothing we have ever seen in our city.

“As if we don’t deserve Clean Air”
“Highway vehicles release about 1.4 billion tons of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere each year—mostly in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2)—contributing to global climate change.
Each gallon of gasoline you burn creates 20 pounds of GHG. That's roughly 5 to 9 tons of GHG each year for a typical vehicle.”
A decline in the Value of Affected Homes
If this deal is finalized, we fear that our homes and properties will be devalued, essentially leaving most of us with no other choice but to sell our homes at a significantly lower market value. These actions would force us to vacate our homes and start our lives all over elsewhere.
Additionally, many of our residents are seniors on fixed incomes, and some face health challenges. As a result, these seniors simply do not have the fortitude or financial means to combat this dire issue or contribute to saving their homes. Based on this, we are diligently doing everything humanly possible to protect everyone’s property.
Property value going from $400K to $80K because of this deal.
